Heart Bypass Surgery is one of the most common types of heart surgeries performed on adults. Heart bypass surgery is recommended when one or more of the blood vessels that transport blood to the heart are blocked. Since it involves a significant amount of preparation and recovery time, the surgery is mostly planned. But in some cases, someone might have to undergo emergency heart bypass surgery as well. Heart bypass surgery is a relatively safe and effective procedure that reduces the risk of heart attack and death to an extent. It is also known as an open-heart surgery since the surgeon cuts the chest open to access the heart.

Types of heart bypass surgery

There are two types of heart bypass surgery performed:

  • On-pump surgery involves using a heart-lung machine that circulates blood and performs the role of respiration for the body.
  • Off-pump surgery usually takes place while the heart is still beating. Here, the surgeons don’t use the heart-lung machine.
  • It’s natural that risks and potential complications vary from person to person. To help you decide better, our surgeons will choose the best treatment option for you. Fortis International Care Hospitals is known to be one of the premium heart bypass surgery hospitals in India for a reason.

What is the procedure?

Like any other organ in the body, the heart also needs an uninterrupted blood supply. This is supplied by the left and right coronary arteries. When these arteries start narrowing down, coronary heart diseases develop. Its probability increases along with the age, particularly if one or more risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, overweight, smoking habit, high cholesterol levels, etc. are present. Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery is done under general anesthesia through a midline cut in the chest. The entire procedure may last up to 4 hours or more depending on the complexity of the disease, number of bypasses and additional course of action.

Once its done, the patient is monitored thoroughly on ventilator to assist in breathing for the initial 3-4 hours, supported with analgesia and sedation. You might also have a tube down your throat to help you breathe and it’s natural for you to feel uncomfortable. The patient is mobilized within 24 hours and later supported with physiotherapy and breathing exercises. A person who has undergone heart bypass surgery may experience the following:

  • Insomnia- difficulty in getting sleep
  • Swelling at the top of chest incision which disappears later
  • Muscle contraction/pain
  • Reduced appetite

Symptoms needing urgent attention:

  • If you face shortness of breath or heart rate more than 120
  • Sudden numbness/weakness
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Bleeding from incision
